6.10. Import and Export

6.10.1 Export surface

To export a surface, click the Export mesh PIC button, in the dialog box that appears, select the file type (ply, obj or stl) and save the mesh.

To set the surface export parameters, cLick the arrow on the right-hand side of the PIC button and choose the Export surface parameters... option. In the Export surface params dialog box (Figure 6.23), check the following boxes:

  • to move the reference point (the point relative to which the model can be deformed in the Vector graphics editors) to the geometrical center of the mesh, in the dialog box check the Center mesh box. Check box is set by default;

  • to use the patient’s coordinates when exporting, check the Use patient coordinates box.



To apply the settings, click OK. To cancel the settings, click Cancel.

PIC You need to be aware that when the surface is printed by a 3D printer, errors may occur for the following reasons:
  1. The surface accuracy depends on the voxel size; the margin of error cannot be smaller than the voxel size.

  2. The boundaries of the structure for which the surface is created depend on the color palette for the initial volume. If a wrong palette is chosen, some tissues that are needed may become invisible, while some negligible tissues may become visible.

  3. The boundaries between tissues characterized by different density values may be blurred because of the physical principles behind the tissue scanning technology. The margin of error may be up to several voxels.

  4. The surface accuracy is subject to antialiasing and depends on the polygon count.

6.10.2 Import surface

To set the surface import parameters, cLick the arrow on the right-hand side of the Import surface(s) PIC button and choose the Surface import parameters... option. In the Surface import params dialog box (Figure 6.24), check the following boxes:

  • to use the patient’s coordinates, check the Use patient coordinates box;

  • To align the centers of the imported surface and the model when importing, check the Add to the center box;

  • To merge the vertices of the triangles when importing a surface in (stl) format, check the Merge imported STL vertices box. This box is checked by default.

Click OK to apply the settings or Cancel to cancel.



To import a surface, click the Import surface(s) button PIC , in the dialog box that appears, select the file and click Open.



The name of the imported mesh, as well as the name of any structure without a volume model, is shown in italics. In Figure 6.25 you see an imported mesh Mesh_example-1. You cannot change the number of triangles for the imported mesh.

To move the imported surface manually, activate the tool Surface positioning PIC and move the surface on the plane of the screen, holding the left mouse button.

To create a segmented structure for a surface, select the imported surface on the segmented structure panel and click Create segmented structure by surface PIC on the segmented structure panel.

6.10.3 Structure Export

DICOM Viewer allows for exporting segmented structures to the current study as a new series or as DICOM RT Structure Set IOD.

To export a structure to the current study as a new series, proceed as follows:

  1. Select the structure you need on the Segmented structure panel.

  2. Click the arrow on the right-hand side of the button or the Export segmented structures PIC button and choose the Export segmented structure as new series option.

The exported structure will be saved in the local storage as a new series of the current study. A thumbnail for the new series will be added to the series panel.

The exported structure can be opened in the flat image viewer, volume reconstruction, or MPR reconstruction tab.

To export a segmented structure to DICOM RT, click the arrow on the right-hand side of the button or the Export segmented structures PIC button and choose the Export segmented structures to DICOM RT structure set... option.



In the dialog box Export to DICOM RT that appears (Figure 6.26):

  • Add the description of the exported RTSTRUCT series. By default, the series description is "Segmentation".

  • In the Structures to export, check the box against the segmented structure you want to export. To export all the structures from the list, check the upper box. By default, the boxes are not checked.

Click OK button to export structures or Cancel to cancel.

The exported structure will be saved in the local storage as a new series with RTSTRUCT modality. A thumbnail for the new series will be added to the series panel. The structures are outlined in each image of the initial series.

If a series has several phases, the structure will only be exported for the current phase. If no structure was exported during the export procedure (e.g. no voxels are visible under the mask), an error message will pop up.

6.10.4 Importing a Structure from DICOM RT

To import a segmented structure, click the Import segmented structures from DICOM RT structure set..." PIC button on the Segmented structure panel.

In the Import from DICOM RT dialog box (Figure 6.27), select an RTSTRUCT modality series to import.



Click OK button to import structure or Cancel to cancel.

In the Structures to import section of the dialog box (Figure 6.28), check the box against the segmented structure you want to import. To import all the structures from the list, check the upper box. By default, the boxes are not checked.



Click OK to import structure or Cancel to cancel.
